When temperatures drop in the fall and winter, you’ll rely on your heater to kick on and keep you and your home warm and comfortable. If your furnace or heat pump doesn’t turn on or is experiencing another problem, you may not need to schedule service. Instead, a simple reset may be all you need.

This blog discusses signs that it’s time for a system reset, how to reset it, and some tips to keep your unit in good condition.

Indicators That Your System Needs a Reset

If you need to reset your unit or the control board, you’ll notice certain signs. The most obvious sign is that your unit is starting to fail; resetting the system might be the key if it’s short-cycling or no longer turning on at all. Additionally, a yellow or red light on the unit likely indicates the need for a system refresh.

How to Reset Your Heat Pump or Furnace

Depending on certain aspects, like the exact issue and the specific unit you’re using for heat, there are a few ways to reset your heat pump or furnace. When your unit is on the fritz, try these troubleshooting tips:

Reset the Thermostat

Start with the thermostat. To reset your thermostat, interact with the system’s interface or your phone’s app for smart systems and reset it. After doing so, you may need to reprogram your desired heating cycle. Additionally, for smart thermostats, you may need to disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi or even download a software update to ensure your system is up to date.

Use the Furnace’s Power Switch

First, locate the power switch on your furnace, which is typically on the metal cabinet exterior containing the blower unit. Flip the switch to the “off” position, wait two to three minutes, and flip it back to “on.” If this doesn’t resolve the issue, follow the next step.

Use the Furnace’s Reset Button

If you have a newer furnace, it should have a reset button featured in red or yellow. These are also typically located near the blower unit. Turn off the furnace, open the blower compartment (which may require a screwdriver), and press the reset button once. If your unit still isn’t operating correctly when you turn the power back on, it’s likely time to call a professional for furnace repair.

Use the Heat Pump’s Reset Button or Power Switch

First, consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website to determine if your heat pump has a reset button or a power switch — one may be on the indoor and outdoor units. To reset your unit, press both buttons or flip both switches. Wait two to three minutes, press the buttons, or flip the switches again. If all else fails, it’s time for heat pump repair.

Reset the Circuit Breaker

If the above steps don’t work, turn off the power to your furnace or heat pump, locate your circuit breakers on the air handler and outdoor unit, and flip both off. Again, wait a few minutes before flipping the switches back on and restoring power to your heater. If this still fails to resolve the issue, schedule professional help.

Tips to Ensure Proper Operation & Avoid Damage

Practicing quick tips for proper operation can prevent system damage. An easy step is frequently replacing or cleaning off your system’s air filter. Additionally, ensure the unit’s gas valves are not blocked or closed. Keep all parts of your unit clean, including things like its flame sensor rod. If you rely on a gas or oil furnace, ensure it always has enough fuel to operate correctly.
